Getting UO
There are several ways you can start playing UO:
- Download the 14-day free trial here
- Download the UO client and purchase a Ultima Online: Mondain's Legacy code here
Helpful Tools
We've approved certain 3rd Party Tools to be used with UO. The two most popular are:
- UO Assist - An addon tool that has a ton of cool features
- UO Auto Map - A map tool that keeps you from getting lost
Your first time logging in!
So, here you are; you've gotten the UO client installed, you have the required internet connection, you've created your account and finished patching up to the latest version of UO, a slice of pizza and a can of soda are within reach and ready to go... now what?
1. Choosing a Client
The very first thing you'll see after the patch message is the client selector. You have two options here: Launch UO 2D or Launch UO 3D. Feel free to choose whichever you prefer, but most UO players like the classic look and feel of the 2D version.
2. What the heck is a shard, anyway?
Once you've chosen what client to run and logged in, you'll pick a shard (server) to play on. For the best game experience, you'll want to pick one that has a latency number less than 150ms (you can see that just to the right of each shard's name), but you're free to make your character wherever you wish. You can have up to 5 characters on each shard, so don't worry about making a "wrong" choice.
3. Creating your Character
Once you've picked a shard, you'll be taken to the character creation screen. Since this is your first time here, go ahead and pick whichever one of the pre-made character templates that sounds good to you. No matter what you choose, you can always make changes later. Ultima Online has a flexible, skill-based system, so you won't be stuck with your first choice.
Next up is customizing your character. You'll need to pick the name, sex and race of your character, and then select a trim pack - er, hairstyle and color and the color of your starting clothes.
The end of the beginning, and where to go now...
Woot! You've made it! But what's this? You've been swept away by some strange guy called "The Wanderer" who will take you on a tour of Sosaria. Listen carefully to his words, as you can say that you've learned something new today!
When he's done with you, you'll be returned to your starting location, which will depend on what template you chose earlier. You'll be offered a quest, which I highly recommend that you complete. It'll help you take your first steps in the world of Ultima Online.
Proceed to the next page in this guide for more information on how to play. Don't stop reading there, as at the end of this guide, we've got some really great tips for you to keep in mind as you delve deeper into the world of Ultima Online.
