The Dark Knight Challenge

The Dark Knight is Born

The flames poured towards him, a seething, rolling mass of carnage rivaling the tides of two full moons. Uzeraan knew his home couldn't withstand the destruction consuming Haven for long. His shields were hasty, his power draining. It was a miracle he'd managed to last this long - darkness raged against the edges of his vision as his magic ebbed away.

"Master!" the scream came against the crash of burning timbers. His maid, Clarissa, appeared out of the corner of his eye running from the southwest room; he knew he didn't have enough strength to teleport her out and still maintain the protections he was barely clinging to.

An unearthly howl rose over the chaos, and, turning, he saw her fall before the great daemon once bound in his castle. A wordless cry sprang from his lips. He had summoned everything he had towards protecting themselves from the outside, from the destruction of Haven and his home that had flared so suddenly from the earth below. He had forgotten the bindings on the dormant threat, a servant of Semidar herself, and now death lay inside as well as out.

Words of Power erupted into the air and suddenly the shields dropped. He had only moments, he knew, but the flames bent, they bent! They twisted to his desperate will, a wrath born of pain and fury and death thundering through his veins. The vortex tore into the daemon, and then they were both elsewhere...

Overview

The Dark Knight was once the mage Uzeraan, who, having lost everything in the destruction of Old Haven, stands now a tortured soul forever bound to the dead city. His quest for vengeance, the hatred that forged his fate - all were woven into the shell that survived his battle with the great daemon once bound in his own home.

Now cursed, he is compelled to fight beneath the ruins with any who dare challenge him. And while he cannot escape his fate, neither is he mindless of it.

Challenging the Dark Knight
  • After making a new character, complete the New Player Experience with Gwen (Note: This requires that the character be created using the Kingdom Reborn client.)
  • Near the end, you will meet the Dark Knight, and receive a special rune from him
  • Cast Recall or Sacred Journey (or use a Recall scroll) on the rune
    • You may wish to wait until you've gained more strength and skills, lest the Dark Knight handily defeat you
  • You will arrive in a waiting area. If there is no one else present, you will soon be teleported into battle. Otherwise, you will be placed in a queue.
  • Note: You can only challenge the Dark Knight using the Kingdom Reborn client

The Battle

Once you are teleported into the arena, you will have ten minutes to defeat the Dark Knight.
  • If you die, you will be returned to New Haven with your corpse, and will have to wait one day before returning to challenge him again.
  • Should you prevail, you will be given one of three rewards, returned to New Haven, and will have to wait three days before returning to fight. You are only rewarded once; further fights are purely for the challenge.
  • When ten minutes pass and you still haven't won, the Dark Knight returns you intact to New Haven, and you must wait another day before trying again.
Throughout the battle, the Dark Knight will attempt to overcome your attacks with a special set of skills. Your best bet is to stay on the move, and make sure you maintain good control over your pets (which can and will become targets). The Dark Knight brings three new fighting abilities to the table:
  • Bum Rush: He gathers energy and then slams into you from a distance, dealing heavy damage and physically knocking you back, stunning you.
  • Echo Strike: The Dark Knight teleports to one of the platforms in the room, and calls down lightning several times to strike you or your pets. The lightning is slightly displaced, allowing you a chance to escape, or even give him a taste of his own medicine.
  • Rally: There is a chance the Dark Knight will attempt to heal himself of serious wounds. In this case, he teleports to the forefront of the room and begins a cycle of healing himself, and knocking back his foes. Strike him, or he could gain as much as 50% of his health back.
As the battle progresses, the music will change to reflect the overall mood. You may notice the Dark Knight becoming more aggressive towards the middle of the fight, and more tired towards the end. Sounds, music, and magical effects all play a part in giving hints to the player on actions to take.

Rewards

The successful challenger will receive one of three rewards from the experience. Each character can only challenge the Dark Knight once for a reward, but are free to return to fight the Dark Knight again and again should they choose. He certainly won't complain, at least.
  • Ring of the Servant: A ring that performs a Greater Heal on the player with a 5 minute cooldown. Contains 20 charges.
  • Echo Staff: A staff that targets a given tile, and performs a lightning strike in the same manner as the Dark Knight's own attack. The lightning will hit the tile three times, each doing less damage than before. Damage is energy based, capped, and the tile cannot be targeted by multiple staffs at the same time. 5 minute cooldown, 20 charges.
  • Skill Tutor Statuette: Once turned on, this object will inform the player of the likely skillgain chance of any action performed. For instance, when fighting a monster, it will tell you whether it will result in a weak chance, is too hard to gain, optimal, etc.
